How to create a sacred space at hOMe

Now that we are working, cooking, and schooling at home (often all at once) it is essential to create a sacred space where you can disconnect from the calling of your home life distractions.

If you can carve out a space in your home to devote to all things soulful wellness, then you can use it to reset whenever you need. Like the practice of yoga, the repetition of coming to your sacred space again and again will prepare you to overcome even the most unexpected obstacles.

  • What is the least trafficked area of your home? Choose a room or corner where you don’t normally go. It’s ok if it’s not glamorous. Ensure this area is at least 7 x 4 feet so you have space for your mat and for you to move. If you’re in a small studio or apartment, just ensure that you aren’t too close to the kitchen or your bed.

  • Once you’ve established the location in your home for your sacred space, take the steps to make it uniquely yours. Think about what kind of scents make you relax, reground, or electrify you. Make sure you have candles, incense and sage that evoke all these feels. What visually stimulates you? Is there a particular photograph or painting in your home that you’d like to bring into your sacred space? Think landscapes or soft visuals to help guide you rather than distract.

  • Whether or not you have a consistent meditation practice, this is your opportunity to set yourself up for success. What can you sit on that is comfortable but grounding? Does your phone distract you? Make sure you have a different way to play calming sounds or to listen to a guided meditation.

  • Think about other ways you can utilize your sacred space. Creative activities such as singing, playing instruments or painting can be done here. Just make sure this space is designated as a sanctuary that is uniquely yours. If any of your activities require guests relocate to a common area.
